Tory leader David Cameron has echoed the sentiments of US Democratic Presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama in calling for black fathers to get more involved with their children.
Mr Cameron said that he had spoken to black church leaders who had expressed fears that too many black fathers were neglecting their children.
Senator Barack Obama's statements about the need for fathers in the black community to take more care of their children was, he added “absolutely correct”. He said that Senator Obama's remarks were brave, and added that they would have a huge impact.
Mr Cameron said: “I've had a number of meetings with black church leaders who make the same point. They are concerned about family breakdown and social breakdown, and want to see what I call a responsibility revolution take place.”
While he agreed that the economic disadvantages and discrimination faced by the black community needed to be tackled, Mr Cameron went on to say “we will never solve the long term problems unless people also take responsibility for their own lives”.
Senator Obama's comments have drawn criticism from some black leaders for raising issues of morality and family values.
Senator Obama is due to meet Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Mr Cameron in London next week.
